This is a form of raku pottery that is referred to as “naked raku” as it has no glaze applied. All pieces are definitely one of a kind. The process begins with pots that have been wheel thrown, horses painted on with a black under glaze and bisque fired in an electric kiln. The pots are then placed in a raku kiln and fired to a temperature of 1100 degrees F. The pieces are then removed from the kiln, placed on a banding wheel and horsehair is applied in a decorative design. This must be done quickly as the pots are cooling and will reach a point that the hair no longer burns. The piece is then airbrushed with a ferric compound to highlight the painted horses and expressive lines. Following this, the pieces are allowed to cool, are washed and allowed to dry and then a protective coating is applied.
